We give thanks for the men and women of the military who protect our liberty and each day ensure for all of us our way of life. We thank You for our state, this pleasant peninsula called Michigan, where we are privileged to live, work, and raise our children.
We thank You for the men and women of this body of government. May it be the prayer of each one of them always—for as long as You in Your providence allow them to serve—that they might seek to serve You with all their heart; that they might seek to work and legislate as humble servants of the people of this state; and that in all things and at all times, they might desire to do what is right for the sake of the welfare and betterment of our state, for the sake of the people of our state, for the sake of the children of our state, and for the glory and praise of Your name.

Statements
Senators Proos and Bieda asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Proos’ statement is as follows:
There are a few things to note today. This chamber had the opportunity very recently to amend the child safety seat laws that put us in a better position to make sure that our kids, when we restrain them in our cars and vehicles, are, in fact, kept safe. Vehicles themselves, as you may already know, are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13, and oftentimes it’s because the child safety seats themselves are not strapped in appropriately. Oftentimes those families choose not to even have child safety seats.
This week, September 14-20, is Child Passenger Safety Week, a good reminder to all of us to make sure that we and our communities remind our families to best take care of the children we have in car seats, boosters, and properly fastened into seatbelts. The National Seat Check is this Saturday, September 20, and all throughout Southwest Michigan, as well as throughout the state of Michigan, there are locations for you to take your family and to recommend to your constituents to have those seats checked.
Check out safercar.gov , which has an opportunity for you to see where you can have your safety seats checked to ensure that, in fact, your kids are safe when traveling on the roads of Michigan’s great southwest or any place in Pure Michigan. Again, I ask that all of my colleagues take advantage of Child Passenger Safety Week and be ensured that your residents and constituents are prepared to properly restrain their kids. Have those cars checked this Saturday, September 20, by looking at safercar.gov .
Senator Bieda’s statement is as follows:
I’m rising today with sad news. Sometimes people who have been part of your life pass away, and I’d like to do a quick memorial statement on behalf of somebody I knew for quite a lot time in my life—actually, one of the people who got me involved in politics. Marilyn Donlin passed away last week after a very active life in the community. Her and her husband, two people who encouraged me to run for my first political office, which was precinct delegate—which I’m proud to say that I won, I still remember, by 186 votes, which was pretty good.
Marilyn Donlin was born on October 28, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan. She was involved in politics at a young age by standing up for social issues for which she believed in. When she was a member of the Detroit Young Democrats in the 1950s, and while she was working on Governor G. Mennen Williams’ campaign, she met her first husband, John Mellon. After John’s untimely death at the hands of a drunk driver, Marilyn continued her work in politics. She then married Bert Donlin, who also had a strong devotion to politics, and they moved to Warren in the late 1950s.
Her strong organizational skills led her to help set up the first district organization in Macomb County. The combination of her experience and commitment to Democratic issues, local community, and political causes made her a natural at training staff over the years. Because she was noted for her toughness and influential leadership, she played a significant role in the Warren and Macomb County political arena. This included managing campaigns such as Warren Mayor Mark Steenbergh, who later appointed her as his first deputy mayor.
Her leadership ability, hard work, and dedication were evident in her work as an elementary school teacher and part-time union leader in the Fitzgerald School District for 37 years. Marilyn was admired and highly respected for her fortitude and contributions which were evident in the many positions that she held. She was a Fitzgerald Education Association Union president, deputy mayor of Warren, one of the first Warren Cable commissioners, president of the Warren Democratic Club, and a proud Democratic activist. Indeed, she was a political community leader who was much admired and will be long remembered.
Surely, we all have the desire to be remembered by those we encounter during life’s journey, and for Marilyn, that is exactly the case. I’d like to extend my condolences to her daughter Madilyn Greiner; her son-in-law Michael Greiner; and grandchildren Kelsey Lynn (Eric) Slugaj and Jack Greiner. May they have comfort in their memory of her as an outstanding citizen, and may her family know our respect for all she accomplished.
I did mention she was a Democratic activist, and I know she’d feel a certain irony and joy if she could have a moment of silence from a Republican-led legislature.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of Marilyn Donlin, former Warren deputy mayor and political activist.
