SUMMARY:
The bill would amend the Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act to require that the classroom instruction portion of the segment one teen driver education course curriculum contain information about the requirement, under the Michigan Vehicle Code, to proceed with caution and yield the right-of-way to a stationary authorized emergency vehicle or reduce speed. It would also have to encourage students to move over or slow down for any other stationary vehicle that has its front and rear warning lamps activated.
This new provisions would be added to the other requirements for a segment one curriculum in Section 37 of the act. Segment one curriculum for teen drivers consists of at least 24 hours of classroom instruction, at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and at least 4 hours of behind-the-wheel observation time (that is, observing another student driver), with the classroom and behind-the-wheel experience to be integrated and related to each other.
