Rev. Tonya Arnesen, Pastor of Dixboro United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, offered the following invocation:
“Living, Loving God of us all:
We thank You for the earth over which You brooded and lovingly labored to create; for Your continuing re-creation of each new day. We thank You for Your Holy Spirit Who guides and directs our lives; Who beckons and invites us into deeper fellowship with You; Who challenges and convicts us when we stray from Your righteous ways.
We need not ask for Your presence this afternoon, for indeed, You are already here. And because You are with us, O God, this is ‘holy ground.’ Enliven us to Your presence which goes before us, walks alongside us and works within us as we seek to know and do Your will.
We thank You for the work that will come before these leaders today; mindful that every item on their Agenda represents countless hours of research, writing, preparation and prayerful conversation. Let Your partnership in their work bring a measure of joy to each one here, so today’s labors are done to Your glory.
Let these who have been elected ‘by the people’ be mindful they are here ‘for the people’ of our great state of Michigan. Let them remember that leadership is a sacred privilege which comes with great responsibility to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.
Re-kindle in them, the sense of ‘holy calling’ and shared purpose that brought these servant leaders to this place. Give them clarity of mind and generosity of heart as they move through the Order of the Day. Endow them with the passion of deeply-felt convictions – which spurs them to seek change and transformation of our state and the state of the world.
In Your wisdom, O God, pair their passionate conviction with honest humility that recognizes – when it comes to seeing the truth, we all have ‘blind-spots.’ When they disagree . . . protect them from becoming disagreeable. Instead, may even the most spirited debate be tempered by mutual respect, common purpose and a shared God-sized vision of what Michigan might become.
As these servant leaders work together towards the realization of a better State, a better world, grant that we all find ways to bring about Your beloved community, Your kingdom of peace and righteousness on earth. Let our life together be a testimony to Your divine love and power; a living prayer of thanksgiving for Your gifts to us and an offering of gratitude and praise for Your goodness.
As a Christian, I end my prayer in the name of Jesus the Christ . . . now I invite You to join me in a moment of silence – wherein You can offer Your personal prayers to the Living, Loving God of us all.
Amen and amen.”

House Resolution No. 291.
A resolution to declare May 11, 2016, as Older Michiganians Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Over 1.9 million Michiganians age 60 and over deserve our utmost respect and gratitude for their many contributions to our communities and our state. Older citizens play a vital role in cities and towns all across our great state; and
Whereas, Older Michiganians are active supporters of Michigan’s economy, workforce, charities, religious institutions, local communities, and institutions of government. This group is one of our state’s greatest resources of understanding our past and improving our future. They are truly a foundation upon which we can build a better tomorrow; and
Whereas, This invaluable group of citizens is being honored and admired for their many years of service to the state of Michigan. They have been an indispensable source of knowledge and inspiration throughout the years; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 11, 2016, as Older Michiganians Day in the state of Michigan. We honor our state’s population of older citizens.

House Resolution No. 292.
A resolution to declare May 2016 as Stroke Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious long-term disability in the state of Michigan; and
Whereas, The federal government estimates show more than $34 billion is spent annually on strokes, including the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity; and
Whereas, Nearly 58 percent of Americans do not know if they are at risk for a stroke and one in three Americans cannot name any of the signs or symptoms of a stroke; and
Whereas, The F.A.S.T. warning signs and symptoms of a stroke include face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, and time to call 9-1-1. Additional stroke warning signs and symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body, confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and severe headache with no known cause; and
Whereas, The American Heart Association urges people to lower their risk of heart disease and stroke by focusing on “Life’s Simple 7” key health factors and behaviors: managing blood pressure, controlling cholesterol, reducing blood sugar, getting active, eating better, losing weight, and stopping smoking; and
Whereas, New and effective treatments have been developed to treat and minimize the severity and damaging effect of strokes, but much more research is needed; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2016 as Stroke Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We urge increased public awareness of the risk factors, warning signs, and symptoms of stroke; and be it further
