Committee:  Government Operations

Complete to 9-12-17

SUMMARY:

HB 4856 would create a new act to declare the period beginning September 11 through September 17 of each year as "Patriot Week".

The bills states: "The legislature encourages citizens, schools and other educational institutions, government agencies, municipalities, and nonprofit, religious, labor, community, and business organizations to recognize and participate in Patriot Week by honoring and celebrating the First Principles, key historical figures, founding documents, and symbols of America to renew the spirit of America."

A preamble found in the bill provides background for the designation of Patriot Week, which begins on the date of the September 11, 2001 attacks and ends on Constitution Day, September 17. It also contains a list of examples of "exceptional, visionary, and indispensable Americans," as well as key documents and physical symbols to celebrate.

The bill would take effect 90 days after being enacted into law.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The bill would have no fiscal impact on state or local government.
