SCHOOL BLDG CONSULTATION S.B. 990 (S-2):
SUMMARY OF BILL
ON THIRD READING
Senate Bill 990 (Substitute S-2 as reported by the Committee of the Whole)
Sponsor: Senator Margaret E. O'Brien
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Revised School Code to prohibit a school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy from commencing the construction of a new school building or the major renovation of an existing school building unless it consulted on the plans for the construction or major renovation regarding school safety issues with a law enforcement agency that had jurisdiction over it over the district or public school academy.
Proposed MCL 380.1264 Legislative Analyst: Nathan Leaman
FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no fiscal impact on the Department of Education and would add marginal costs to intermediate school districts, school districts, and public school academies that construct or renovate school buildings, as well as local law enforcement agencies. The costs would apply only to those districts and academies that construct and renovate school buildings, and the law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over them. The marginal costs added to the construction or renovation planning process are indeterminate, because of the differences between local units.
