Rep. Kathy Crawford, from the 38th District, offered the following invocation:

“It is certainly fitting that today, February 14, 2017…Valentines Day…that we think of LOVE.

MY dictionary description says that LOVE is affection, esteem, friendship, regard and there is over a page of the various definitions of love.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said that ‘LOVE is our highest word and the synonym of God’.

Since the beginning of time, there has been much written about the power of LOVE and yet…we still struggle to love one another.

One of Jesus Christ’s 12 disciple’s was Matthew, a dishonest tax collector.

Tax collectors were notoriously corrupt because they extorted far and above what was owed, to ensure their personal profit.

Despite his sinful past, Matthew was uniquely qualified to be a disciple. He was an accurate record keeper and keen observer of people. He captured the smallest details. Those traits served him well when he wrote the Gospel of Matthew and in Chapter 5 of that gospel, Matthew spoke, saying

‘You have heard that it was said …YOU WILL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AND HATE YOUR ENEMY… but I say to you…LOVE your enemies and pray for those who persecute you so that you may be sons of your Father Who is in heaven.

For He makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?

You therefore must be perfect and Above all, LOVE each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.’

Today, on this Hallmark day of Love, it is my hope that each of us here are touched by the ancient words of the disciple Matthew. May God add His blessing to the reading of His holy word.”
