Fr. Dominic Macioce, Parochial Vicar of St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Allen Park, offered the following invocation:

“In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

During this penitential time in the Christian season of Lent, let us begin this day turning to God and our neighbor to confess our sin.

Most holy and merciful God, we confess to You and to one another, that we have greatly sinned in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do; through our fault, through our fault, through our most grievous fault. We have not loved You with our whole heart, mind, and strength. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven. Restore us, O God.

May our humble confession, win for us the grace and wisdom to fulfill all we undertake. Help us to work for those under our charge with prudence and fortitude. You have allowed us to be the arm of Your righteousness and justice, may we always exercise that commission with compassion and truth. Accomplish in us the work of Your salvation.

On this day, we ask Your blessing on the men and women of this House, who have been entrusted with the care of this great State’s people. May they bring discerning ears to hear not only what they are inclined to hear, but those words that might be unwelcome although important to hear. May all citizens help to make their Representatives better as legislators and as people as well.

Have mercy on us, almighty God. Forgive us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in eternal life. We give You thanks for all the blessings You have already poured out upon us and we come to You with an expectant faith in future blessings by which to govern Your people with truth, justice and peace.

And may Almighty God Bless you all in the N. of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit Amen.”

Whereas, Profound economic and technological changes in our society are rapidly reflected in the structure and nature of work, thereby placing new and additional responsibilities on our educational system; and

Whereas, Career and technical education gives high school students experience in practical, meaningful applications of skills such as reading, writing and mathematics, thus improving the quality of their education, motivating potential dropouts and giving all students leadership opportunities in their fields and in their communities; and

Whereas, Career and technical education offers individuals lifelong opportunities to learn new skills, which provide them with career choices and potential satisfaction; and

Whereas, The ever-increasing cooperative efforts of career and technical educators, business, and industry stimulate the growth and vitality of our local economy and that of the entire nation by preparing graduates for career fields forecast to experience the largest and fastest growth in the next decade; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare February 2018 as Career and Technical Education Month in the state of Michigan.

The resolution was adopted.

Reps. Cox, Canfield, Chirkun, Cochran, Crawford, Hammoud, Hoadley, Howrylak, Hughes, Lasinski, Leutheuser, Liberati, Maturen, Pagan, Rendon, Sneller and Zemke offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 254.

A resolution to declare February 26-March 4, 2018, as Eating Disorders Awareness Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The 2018 theme of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is “It’s Time to Talk About it,” and will focus on expanding the conversation around eating disorders to include the diverse perspectives of the millions of people affected. Eating disorders are shrouded in stigma, secrecy, and stereotypes and the goal of this year’s campaign is to shine a light on these deadly illnesses, dispel misinformation, and connect people with the support they need to recover; and

Whereas, Eating disorders are serious conditions that are potentially life-threatening and have a great impact on both a person’s physical and emotional health. Too often, signs and symptoms are overlooked and many individuals, families, and communities are unaware of the devastating mental and physical consequences of eating disorders, as well as the pressures, attitudes, and behaviors which shape them. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from clinically significant eating disorders at some time in their life. These disorders affect people across all backgrounds and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders. The National Eating Disorders Association strives to address the many misconceptions regarding eating disorders, and to highlight the availability of resources for treatment and support. National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a collaborative effort consisting primarily of volunteers, including eating disorder professionals, health care providers, students, educators, social workers, and individuals committed to raising awareness of the dangers surrounding eating disorders and the need for early intervention and treatment access; and

Whereas, Eating disorders usually appear in adolescence and are associated with substantial psychological problems, including depression, substance abuse, and suicide. They are serious illnesses, not lifestyle choices. In fact, anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Many cases of eating disorders go undetected as less than one-third of youth with eating disorders will receive treatment; and

Whereas, Eating disorders experts have found that prompt intensive treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery. Therefore, it is important for educators, medical providers, parents, and community members to be aware of the warning signs and the symptoms of eating disorders; and

Whereas, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week will encourage people to share their stories and experiences with disordered eating and body image struggles, highlight the importance of screenings for the early detection and intervention of eating disorders, and bust myths and present eating disorders as a public health issue that affects all kinds of people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, size, or background; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare February 26-March 4, 2018, as Eating Disorders Awareness Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize the vital work of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week in promoting public and media attention to the seriousness of eating disorders and for working to improve education about their biological and environmental causes, as well as how to help those who are struggling with these debilitating diseases.
