Senator Kenneth B. Horn of the 32nd District offered the following invocation:
Dear Lord, help us all to learn from our past, and then put yesterday neatly behind us. Be with us as we approach this new day, not only as a new beginning but as a fresh start. Lord, lead us and guide us throughout our earthly walk, even when it seems like we’re not doing a lot of walking. We pray, Lord, that You become a central and increasingly important part of all we do. Give us the courage to step into this new and unknown day, holding tightly to Your hand, and into Your hands we place our trust. We ask for the wisdom to make decisions that are pleasing to You. When our work here is finished, bring us safely home to our families to continue preparations for our Christmas celebrations.
Finally, for all of Your children who have felt the sting of loss, Lord, give them a special peace in their hearts. Plant in them the hope that comes with the Christmas story and the glorious birth of Your Son.
Jesus, in Your name we pray. Amen.
The President pro tempore, Senator Schuitmaker, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

I did want to just take one moment to thank all of the members who participated in the Governor’s task force, my colleagues here tonight, and especially our staff who have taken so much time and energy to put work into this legislation.
Our goal throughout this process was to protect those who serve our communities, guard against irresponsible use of tax dollars, and allow for local control and local solutions.
