Lord, we are grateful for Your goodness, for Your grace, and for blessing us in so many ways. We’re grateful for giving the Senate the chance to lead. I pray that You would grant them, indeed, wisdom. Grant them the right paths, the paths that lead to justice and righteousness and a good, strong sense of who we are as Michiganders. Thank You for giving us the privilege of living in this great state.

Thank You for granting them the strength to lead and the ability to discern good paths. I do pray that You would grant them wisdom. I pray that You would grant them a sense to follow after Your lead and to find the path that does work as best we can to help all those who live in this great state.

Lord, we pray for our nation, and the ability to protect the most impressionable among us—the old, the weak, the hurting, and the unborn. Grant us a culture of life as You have given life. I pray You would help us to give all people a chance at life who live in this state and this country.

Lord, awaken Your church too; help us to be on the healing end of the problems of the world, not just depend on government, but also individuals and just, good, godly people, to lift the burden that people carry.

I pray that You bless their efforts, bless a strong sense of working together to achieve common goals that benefit people. I pray for a life of integrity, that each man and woman here will leave their post better than when they came. Bless their marriages and the strain of campaigning, and bless their kids, too; protect their hearts.

We acknowledge You as the source of all good paths, and, most importantly, the highest path, life in Jesus Christ, and it’s in His name that we pray, and everybody said: Amen.

The President, Lieutenant Governor Calley, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Statements

Senator Gregory asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal.

The motion prevailed.

Senator Gregory’s statement is as follows:

I solemnly rise to request a moment of silence for our former colleague in the House of Representatives, the Honorable Maxine Berman of West Bloomfield, who passed on Friday, March 2, 2018.

Representative Berman served in the Legislature representing the city of Southfield for 14 years from 1983 to 1996. She was a trailblazer and a champion for education, women’s rights, and affirmative action. She was deservedly inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 2015. Representative Berman’s legislative efforts for women’s health led Michigan to become the first state in the U.S. to acquire the accreditation of mammogram facilities. In addition to serving as an effective community and legislative leader, her list of personal accomplishments included serving as director of special projects under Governor Jennifer Granholm, Michigan’s first and only woman governor; and she was selected as the first woman to serve as Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government at Central Michigan University.

Maxine Berman represented the city of Southfield and the Jewish community with endearing passion. Her passing leaves a void that cannot easily be filled. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones on their loss. We pray Maxine Berman will rest in peace.

A moment of silence was observed in honor of Maxine Berman, former member of the House of Representatives.
