Rep. Kathy S. Crawford, from the 38th District, offered the following invocation:

“Today is Ash Wednesday and this begins a period of inner reflection and self examination. Ashes were used in ancient times to express grief, sorrow for sins and faults. We begin this season acknowledging our need for love and forgiveness for our faults.

Gracious Lord we ask for Your guidance and forgiveness when we have fallen short. Give the men and women of this House, Your generous blessing, as they endeavor to legislate for the good of the people of this great state of Michigan.

Help us to be good stewards of the treasures of our state and nation. We seek Your guidance for wisdom, integrity and strength so that we may make sensible decisions for the well-being of all.

And God…we commend to Your care and keeping, all the men and women who are first responders and the members of our military at home and abroad… as all of these special people face daily perils. Give their families strength and give them peace.

The ashes today remind us that our lives on this earth won’t last forever….as stated in Genesis 3:19 ‘remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return’.

Be with us now Lord, fill our hearts with thankfulness for allowing us to be together today in this historic Capitol. Help each of us to feel Your presence today and everyday.

Amen.”
