Pastor
Sam Krikke of
Searchlight Ministries of Hudsonville offered the following invocation:
Our
Father, we bless You this morning for this opportunity to gather at the start
of our workday to seek Your face. We bless You for the love of the Father, the
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. We bless
You for Your presence here with us.
Help
us to know You and to recognize Your works: Your power, goodness, wisdom,
mercy, and kindness. May we model our lives—all we say and do—so that we
reflect the fullness of Your presence within us. And may You be honored and praised.
I
thank You, Father, for these men and women who serve our state so faithfully
and diligently. They have dedicated themselves to public service and we are
grateful for them. And so may they, along with all people, humble themselves in
Your presence, seeking Your leadership and guidance in all of their work.
May
they take to heart Your message from the prophet Isaiah, who said “I will make
justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line.” Father, may Your
Holy Spirit empower them to govern, not simply according to party lines, but
according to Your righteousness and Your justice. May they be filled then with
compassion and understanding, being quick to listen and slow to speak. May they
abound in wisdom and in love for what is right. May they model mercy and love
in their approach to governing.
Help
these men and women to respect each other, even when they have differing views
and opinions. May their words to each other be gracious and their words about
each other be even more gracious. Forgive them when they are not respectful,
and in those moments give them the grace to seek reconciliation.
Father,
we know that governing is hard work, and yet it is the work that You have given
to them. Grant them courage to do what is right and embark on the path that
serves the common good. And may You grant us here—in the state of Michigan, and
throughout our nation—the gift of peace.
We pray all of this in confidence that You will hear and
answer our prayers. In the name of the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. Amen.
The President pro tempore, Senator Nesbitt, led the
members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge
of Allegiance.

Statements

Senator
Bayer’s statement is as follows:
I just wanted to make sure that if you are not aware, colleagues, in the
House, Representative Brenda Carter lost her son the other day, suddenly and
tragically. He has a family and he has kids. It’s really, really sad. I just
wanted to make sure you knew about that. If you are looking for information on
the details of anything, please feel free to reach out to my office. Please
make sure that you spend a moment to send thoughts and prayers to Brenda Carter
and her family.
Senator
Hertel’s statement is as follows:
On my desk today I have two bluebacks
available for co-sponsorship. This legislation would require schools to conduct
suicide prevention training in schools and strengthen school requirements for
preventing bullying and cyberbullying.
Every student should feel safe at school. Unfortunately, many young
people are suffering in silence every day. Even when students speak out about
the struggles they are facing, or when the warning signs are there; even when
we do everything right to help, it’s sometimes not enough. Suicide is the
second-leading cause of death among young people 15 to 24. According to the
2013 CDC survey, one in six high school students reported having seriously
considered suicide, with one in 12 reporting having attempted it. According to
the CDC, one in five high school students reported being bullied within the
last year, with 15 percent experiencing cyberbullying. This legislation gives
schools the tools they need to approach bullying as the serious public health
it is, and to take a more active role in preventing the public health crisis
that is adolescent suicide.
In the Gallery today, I have some very special guests that I’ve worked
with for years on this important legislation. In the Gallery is Kevin Epling of East Lansing. We also have Eric Thompson, Patty
Morley of Haslett, and their son, Spencer. Kevin and his wife, Tammy, lost
their son, Matt, to suicide in 2002 after an incident of bullying. He was 14
years old. After Matt’s death they have both fought and advocated tirelessly
for anti-bullying policies with Matt’s Safe School Law taking effect in 2011.
Eric and Patty lost their son, Evan, to suicide in 2016. He was 13 years old.
Since Evan’s death, Eric and Patty have advocated for school personnel and students to be trained in
identifying the warning signs and risk factors of suicide and depression.
Their stories are painful, and it’s heartbreaking to know how many
parents across Michigan share their experiences. These bills are simple
requirements of schools that could save countless lives. We can never prevent
all suicides. When it happens to those that we know, we struggle to understand
it. We ask questions like “why did it happen?” and “what could we have done
better?” These bills, colleagues, are a small part of the answer to that
question.
