Rabbi Marla Hornsten,
Rabbi of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, offered the following invocation:
“Elohainu v’elohai avotainu v’imotaninu,
Our God and God of our fathers and our
mothers,
as You blessed our ancestors in ancient
days, we ask Your blessing upon us as well.
Particularly today, we ask for blessing
upon the House of Representatives here in the great state of Michigan, as they
gather in session.
As well we know, these are challenging
times in which we live.
We are too often separated by our
differences, rather than our similarities.
But it is in our similarities where our
strengths lie: our common bonds of family, love and patriotism—
Our wish to hand our children a better
world.
You, our leaders, can best impact that
future by discourse and actions here that are founded on tolerance,
understanding, wisdom and kindness.
The Talmud, the ancient Jewish text of
commentary on religious law, actually teaches that ‘the highest form of wisdom
is kindness.’
As a rabbi, I do not profess to know
the world of creating legislation; but I do know that your responsibility is
great, and that how you treat each other in this House is vital to your ability
to help the good people of our great state.
And so, I implore you to always take
the high road of kindness and compassion.
One of our ancient rabbis, Rabbi Shimon
is quoted in the Pirke Avot,
ethics of our ancestors saying: Al shelosha de’varim ha olam omed: The world stands
on three things: On law, on truth and on peace.
Certainly, that is the case today as
well and the goals of this esteemed body:
To create law that is fair and supportive
of all Michiganders
To pursue truth as our guiding
principle in the work that we do
And to be sources of peace in a state
and a country that cherishes peace.
God, we seek Your guidance today and
every day, as we work to achieve these goals. Grant us pure hearts and pure
souls as together we strive, to create a pure Michigan.
Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions
Reps. Eisen, O’Malley, Markkanen, Lightner, Mueller, Allor, Bellino,
Green, Steven Johnson, Berman, Maddock, Paquette, Wakeman, Frederick, Lower,
Alexander, Wozniak, LaFave, Afendoulis, Hornberger, Hoitenga, Meerman and
Filler offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 227.
A resolution to reaffirm the
right of Michigan residents to keep and bear arms under the Constitution of the State of Michigan of
1963 and the Constitution of the
United States.
Whereas, Article I, Section 6 of
the Constitution of the State of Michigan
of 1963 clearly affirms a right to keep and bear arms. This provision
prescribes that the primary purpose of the right to keep and bear arms is not
related solely to hunting, but undoubtedly allows Michigan citizens to be able
to protect their selves and families from the private lawlessness of other
persons or potential tyranny of governments; and
Whereas, The Second Amendment to
the Constitution of the United States
clearly states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not
be infringed.”; and
Whereas, The Michigan Legislature
will not pass laws that would infringe upon the ability of Michigan residents
to own and keep firearms. The Michigan Legislature will ensure that legislation
in violation of our constitutional right to bear arms will not be imposed upon
the citizens of Michigan by either the federal government or itself and would
view such infringements as violations of both the Second Amendment and the Constitution of the State of Michigan of
1963; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of
Representatives, That we reaffirm the right of Michigan residents to keep and
bear arms under the Constitution of the
State of Michigan of 1963 and the Constitution
of the United States.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Judiciary.
