Rev.
Dan Scheid, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Flint, offered the
following invocation:
“O
God, Who created us in Your own image, Who is the fountain of wisdom, Whose
will is good, and Whose word is truth:
I give
You thanks for the fruits of the earth, the industry of our people, and for the
labors of our workers. Make us, I pray, faithful stewards of Your great bounty,
for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need. And
grant that every one of us may enjoy a just and fair portion of the riches of
this land.
Look
with justice, compassion, and mercy upon the people in this state and the
community of nations who live with injustice, terror, disease, and death as
their constant companions. Have mercy upon us and help us to eliminate our
cruelty to these our neighbors.
Strengthen
those who spend their lives establishing equal protection of the law and equal
opportunities for all. Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to
make no peace with oppression.
Direct,
in our time, I pray, members of the press and of the academy, who report and
speak where many listen, and write what many read; that they may do their part
in making the heart of this people wise, its mind sound, and its will just.
Send
down upon those who hold office in our counties, cities, and townships the
spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may
faithfully serve in their offices to promote the well-being of all people.
I ask
You to guide and bless the Legislature, Executive, and Courts of this state of
Michigan and of our nation, that they may pass, enforce, and interpret laws
that are wise and good, to the glory of Your name and the welfare of Your
people.
And
Almighty God, Who has promised to hear the petitions of Your people: I ask You
in Your mercy to incline Your ear to us who have made our prayers and
supplications unto You; and grant that those things which we have faithfully
asked according to Your will may be obtained to the relief of our necessity and
to show forth Your glory. Amen.”

Resolution No. 216.
A
resolution to urge Major League Baseball to continue its support for
minor-league baseball teams.
(For
text of resolution, see House Journal No. 4, p. 43.)
With the recommendation that the following substitute (H-1)
be adopted and that the resolution then be adopted.
Substitute
for House Resolution No. 216.
A resolution to urge Major League Baseball to continue its
support for minor-league baseball teams.
Whereas, Major League Baseball is currently considering a
plan that would include the elimination of 42 minor-league teams; and
Whereas, Minor-league baseball teams are major economic
drivers in their communities, providing jobs and tax revenue while benefiting
local business by drawing people into commercial areas. The elimination of
these teams would have a pronounced negative effect on local businesses and
residents whose jobs depend on gameday activities; and
Whereas, Minor-league baseball teams are a source of
community pride and promote local investment and economic development. Some
teams have been a part of their communities for decades. These communities have
invested in their teams, including in stadium infrastructure projects that will
be wasted if local teams lose support; and
Whereas, Minor-league baseball teams provide community
benefits beyond economic impact. Minor-league games are affordable family fun
that create untold memories while attending games and foster a connection to
the national pastime. The elimination of minor-league baseball teams could take
these experiences away from families for which Major League Baseball games are
either too expensive or too far away; and
Whereas, Failure to reach a new agreement between Major
League Baseball (MLB) and Minor League Baseball (MiLB) could lead to the
elimination of the affiliations of all minor league teams including Michigan’s
three minor league teams: the West Michigan WhiteCaps, the Lansing Lugnuts, and
the Great Lakes Loons; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge
Major League Baseball to continue to negotiate in good faith with Minor League
Baseball to reach a solution that achieves Major League Baseball’s goals
without having to eliminate any minor league affiliations; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
the Commissioner of Major League Baseball and the President of Minor League
Baseball.
