Mike Shirkey of the 16th District offered the
following invocation:
Heavenly
Father, from the dust of the ground You formed us; with Your hands You crafted
us; with Your Word You led us; and with Your Spirit You breathed life into us.
Lead us
as You see fit, Father. Guide our footsteps so that our feet will not slip. You
are our Good Shepherd; we know Your voice and another we will not follow. We
are Your sons; we are Your daughters. You have made us in Your image—mold us,
shape our hearts to reflect Yours. Lord, lead our spirit to follow after You,
and Father we surrender all to You, for we are Yours. We are Your children; we
are Your clay. Lead us and we will follow; guide us and we will forever be
grateful, for You alone are worthy of all honor and glory and praise. We lift
You high above our doubts and our shortcomings. We surrender to You now and
forever. You are our potter; we are Your clay. Use us as You please.
In the
strong and mighty and powerful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
The President, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist, led the
members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge
of Allegiance.

The motion prevailed.
Senator Bullock entered the
Senate Chamber.
Senator
LaSata asked and was granted unanimous
consent to make the statement and moved that a statement be printed in the
Journal.
The
motion prevailed.
Senator LaSata’s statement is as follows:
Colleagues, often what is lost
when we are talking about fixing our roads is the people who actually fix our
roads. Despite the inherent risk, they go to work each day putting in long,
hard hours to fix and maintain our transportation system. Last Wednesday,
southwest Michigan unfortunately lost one of these dedicated men. Kevin White,
a maintenance worker in the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Coloma
Garage, died from injuries sustained when a tire from a passing truck struck
him while he was clearing large debris from the shoulder of I-94 in Berrien
County. Mr. White was a nine-year MDOT employee and the Benton Township
Supervisor. He leaves behind a wife and daughter and many family and friends
and colleagues who loved him. At 48, he was tragically taken from them far too
soon. Kevin’s loss is a sobering reminder of the dangers of his profession and
of our responsibilities as drivers. It is up to us, individually, to do the
right thing and focus on the road to help keep us, our precious cargo, and
other motorists safe on the road every time we get behind the wheel, especially
when driving through work zones.
A moment of silence was observed
in memory of Kevin White, maintenance worker in the Department of
Transportation.

Statements
The
motion prevailed.
Senator Bullock’s statement is as
follows:
I stand here representing several
caucuses, including the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, the Senate
Democratic Caucus, and the Detroit Caucus to request a moment of silence, as
mere words cannot express the tremendous sadness and hurt felt after learning
of the passing of the Honorable and retired Congressman John Conyers, the
Dean and longest serving African American of the United States Legislature, and
for me personally, more than a role model. He represented me almost my entire
life and I recently had the pleasure of representing him as his State Senator,
living in the 4th District. We could speak for days about this man, but I’m
sure I speak for many when I say we have lost a truly committed humanitarian
that was a champion for social justice, human, and civil rights. Congressman
John Conyers was a noble public servant that made sure the voiceless were
always heard. He was a true giant for our community, the country, and beyond.
He stood tall in the midst of the 1967 Detroit rebellion, was a founding member
of the Congressional Black Caucus, and will be remembered for pushing a series
of progressive and liberal causes, especially from his powerful perch as the
Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
Congressman Conyers co-sponsored
the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and was the primary reason why a day honoring Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. exists. He was a king who never lost his common touch;
a role model who had tremendous impact over five decades. The Congressman was a
wonderful human being who fought day in and day out for not only his
constituents in the African American community, but for all human beings. Like
many, I am personally thankful to have had the opportunity to know him. He was
beyond kind, but never swayed when it came to representing the people of the
world. When we last sat down he advised me to always support the people you
serve and in your community, the state of Michigan, and always protect the
greater good of all communities while providing uplift.
His legacy will never be
forgotten, so we request a moment to celebrate and reflect on the life of the
Dean, Congressman John Conyers.
A moment of silence was observed
in memory of John James Conyers, Jr., former member of the United States
House of Representatives.
