Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson, from the 5th District, offered the following invocation:

Prayer for Unity

‘Racial Harmony’

Compassionate and Gracious God, we know the truth proclaimed in Your word that we are all created in Your image. Too easily we allow division based on culture, language, or race. Change our behavior and make us united.

Let us focus on our shared status as Your creation and unite together over what we have in common and not fracture over how we differ. To You, the Creator of all people, I pray. Amen.”

A resolution of tribute offered as a memorial for Woodrow Stanley, former member of the Michigan House of Representatives.

Throughout his career, he became a prominent leader in the Michigan Democratic Party and other organizations, such as the Michigan Municipal League, the Michigan Association of Mayors, and the National League of Cities. In 2009, after a landslide victory, he began his first of three terms with the House of Representatives; and

Whereas, during his time in the House, Representative Stanley was dedicated to improving the economic and educational outcomes of the residents in his district and the state of Michigan. Rep. Cynthia Johnson, having reserved the right to explain her protest against the passage of the bill, made the following statement:

“Mr. Speaker and members of the House:

It is very sad that we are accepting to not encourage the practice of writing, at least that’s how I’m seeing this. The subjects of reading, writing, and arithmetic used to be the three foundational pillars of education and have long been considered indispensable for society. An indicator of progress in any culture is the percentage of people who can read and write. Progress is being replaced with supposed equity in the state of Oregon. Now Michigan is doing the same thing. If it is to make the playing field equal, I do not believe this is the way to go. As a black woman, this legislation is insulting and will ultimately hurt in the long run.”
