Statements
The motion prevailed.
Senator Nesbitt’s statement is as follows:
Many of our communities have silent leaders—those who lead by example, without fanfare or notoriety, but are known for their generosity and selflessness. My community recently lost one of those leaders. His name was Patrick Allkins. Though he never sought the spotlight, his influence was deeply felt by all who knew him.
Patrick’s journey of service began early when he joined the United States Navy as a Seabee, serving in Vietnam. This spirit of service continued throughout his life, particularly in his commitment to education. A graduate of Lake Michigan College and Western Michigan University—go Broncos—Patrick dedicated himself to supporting education at all levels. He served on numerous boards and established several scholarships, including the Janet G. Allkins Memorial Endowment Scholarship at KVCC and multiple Allkins Family Military and Veteran Scholarships at Western Michigan University.
As the founder of Frizkin Enterprises, Patrick helped many find employment and supported local businesses through his involvement with the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Chambers of Commerce. His business success never overshadowed his core values, with family always remaining the center and heart of his life. He and his wife, Jan, were equal partners in both life and charitable endeavors, making their communities stronger together. Patrick’s legacy extends through his children, Cody and Chris, and their families, as well as through the Allkins Family Foundation. This foundation recently pledged a half-million dollars to help Western Michigan University remodel their women’s locker rooms, a testament to Patrick’s ongoing commitment to giving back.
Surviving Patrick are his loving wife Jan, daughter Cody and son-in-law Brandon, son Chris and wife Melissa, and grandchildren Murry, Emmery, Marvin, and Josslyn. Patrick’s greatest joy was his family, but his influence reached far beyond. When asked what he hoped his legacy would be: “If I inspire somebody else to give, then it’s worth it.” He inspired countless individuals, including myself, to give and to serve. His generosity of spirit, time, and wisdom has left an indelible mark on our community.
As we remember Patrick Allkins, let’s strive to embody the qualities he admired in his mother and lived out himself: courage, commitment, and generosity. May his legacy inspire us all to lead by example and make a difference in other lives.
