Motions and Resolutions

Reps. VanderWall, Alexander, Breen, Fitzgerald, Glanville, Haadsma and Rheingans offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 246.

A resolution to declare May 5-11, 2024, as Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Many people living with serious mental illnesses (for example, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder) or gastrointestinal disorders (for example, gastroparesis, upset stomach, nausea and vomiting) may be treated with medications that work as dopamine receptor blocking agents, including antipsychotics and antiemetics; and

Whereas, While ongoing treatment with these medications can be necessary, prolonged use is associated with tardive dyskinesia (TD), an involuntary movement disorder that is characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal and repetitive movements of the face, torso, limbs, and fingers or toes; and

Whereas, Even mild symptoms of TD can impact people physically, socially and emotionally; and

Whereas, It is estimated that TD affects approximately 600,000 people in the United States and approximately 65 percent of people with TD have not been diagnosed, making it important to raise awareness about the symptoms; and

Whereas, It is important that people taking these medications be monitored for TD by a healthcare provider. Regular screening for TD is recommended by the American Psychiatric Association; and

Whereas, Clinical research has led to approval of treatments for adults with TD by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Recognition and treatment of TD can make a positive impact in the lives of many people experiencing psychotic and mood disorders; and

Whereas, Michigan can raise awareness of TD among the public and medical community; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 5-11, 2024, as Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week in the state of Michigan. We encourage anyone experiencing uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements to consult their healthcare provider regarding their symptoms.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

Rep. Wilson moved that consideration of the resolution be postponed for the day.

The motion prevailed.

Reps. Steele, Bierlein, Beson, Fox, Neyer, DeBoyer, Kunse, Zorn, Aragona, Martin, Meerman, Outman, Schmaltz, Roth, Wozniak, Bezotte, Alexander, St. Germaine, Smit, Hoadley, Borton, Schuette, Posthumus, Jaime Greene, Harris, Cavitt, DeBoer, Price, VanderWall, Steckloff, Wilson, MacDonell, Arbit, Breen and Rheingans offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 247.

A resolution to declare May 2, 2024, as End Jew-Hatred Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, For millennia, the Jewish people have sustained their shared religious, cultural, and ethnic identity and traditions in the face of enslavement, persecution, genocide, segregation, and discrimination; and

Whereas, The Jewish community has continued to be subjected to antisemitism and Jew-hatred, including discrimination in the workplace, on school campuses, and in public spaces; and

Whereas, Hate crimes directed against the Jewish community have skyrocketed in recent years, inspiring and empowering Jewish people to discover and embrace their heritage, without fear of attack or persecution; and

Whereas, We all share an obligation to condemn and combat Jew-hatred in all of its forms; and

Whereas, We recognize the urgent need to stand against Jew-hatred so that the intergenerational trauma of the past shall never be repeated; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2, 2024, as End Jew-Hatred Day in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That we set aside political differences, unite with singular purpose to condemn Jew-hatred in all of its forms, and stand resolute to end the discrimination and persecution of the Jewish people.

The resolution was referred to the Committee on Government Operations.

Reps. Weiss, Alexander, Breen, Churches, Fitzgerald, Glanville, Haadsma, Hill, MacDonell, Rheingans, Xiong and Young offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 248.

A resolution to declare May 6-10, 2024, as Teacher Appreciation Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, An equitable and effective system of free public-school education for all students is essential to our democratic system of government; and

Whereas, The United States of America and the state of Michigan have made considerable progress in the social, technological, and scientific fields due to our system of free and universal public education; and

Whereas, Much of this progress can be attributed to dedicated and hard-working teachers who are entrusted with the educational development of our children; and

Whereas, Teachers should be held with high esteem, as they reflect the value our community places on public education; and

Whereas, Teachers hold an important role nationwide, as they are significant factors in shaping children and youth; and

Whereas, Teachers are deserving of recognition for their tireless efforts and their commitment to educating students; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 6-10 as Teacher Appreciation Week in the state of Michigan.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The resolution was adopted.

Rep. Posthumus moved that the Committee on Government Operations be discharged from further consideration of House Resolution No. 237.
