Pastor Gary Mindel, Senior Pastor of Harbor Light Community Chapel in Harbor Springs, offered the following invocation:

“Heavenly Father.

You are mighty and sovereign. No one is Your equal nor stands beside You. We are so grateful for Your infinite wisdom, power and presence. Thank You for creating government and the structure of authority.

Thank You for loving us and demonstrating that love by sending Your son Jesus Christ the perfect sinless sacrifice. Thank You for providing a way of a relationship with You through Jesus to all people who seek You.

You have shown us what true leadership really is in the life Your son Jesus. He is the servant leader, Who put the needs of others before Himself. He also said, ‘Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.’

I pray we have the same attitude that Jesus had. Who, even though He was God, did not see it necessary to cling to position or titles. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a servant. While being 100% God, was also 100% man and humbled Himself in obedience to You Father God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Thank You for elevating Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.

Thank You for all these wonderful men and women who are in place to serve the people of Michigan as servant leaders. Thank You that so many of them have put on hold their own businesses and pursuits to serve the people of Michigan with honesty, integrity and righteousness. I pray they daily humble themselves before You and as a result You will give them great governing success. I pray that You will honor them, make them well known for their submission to You and the answers You have available to them through the principles of Your word, as well as the inspiration of Your guiding, teaching and instructive Holy Spirit. Make them bold in standing for what is right, true and holy.

I pray that You give them the ability to take complex problems and simplify them to a practical solution. I pray that all laws they produce are life-giving and life-saving. I pray that all who read them run with them correctly and make the people of the state of Michigan flourish. I pray You would give them the ability to see down the road and make decisions that would provide long term health and wellness to this state.

I pray they would be fiscally responsible with every dollar put in their hands. We pray You would protect them from temptation and from the tricks and schemes of the evil one, who seeks to steal, kill and destroy. We trust in You God and not ourselves because the proud are crooked, but the righteous live by faith in God.

We pray that today’s session of state government will be ordained and productive. That it glorifies You and lifts the heads of people of Michigan out of their troubles and on to the glory of Your name.

If you would lift your hands.

‘May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace.’

I pray all of these things in the powerful name of Your son Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions

Reps. Thompson, Alexander, Fitzgerald, Jaime Greene, Johnsen, MacDonell, Paiz, Rheingans, Rogers and Witwer offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 38.

A resolution to declare March 11, 2025, as Community Volunteer Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Volunteers are a vital resource and have contributed to the health, education, welfare, recreation, culture, and environment of the state of Michigan; and

Whereas, One in twenty children will have lost a parent by the age of sixteen. This creates a significant amount of trauma for that child. Many times, it creates financial burdens on top of grief that were not there before. Families are left with little guidance and support on how to navigate through the grief process and also life as it was known before; and

Whereas, There are community volunteer organizations dedicated to providing guidance, stability, and financial assistance to families with children who have lost one or both parents. This all-too-common tragedy transcends the lines of race, religion, and status and often forces children to prematurely assume the burden of adult responsibility; and

Whereas, In addition to immediate financial resources for living expenses, there are community volunteer organizations that attempt to provide at least some semblance of the parent’s mentoring hand, now reduced to memories and photographs; and

Whereas, The hard work and commitment of volunteers have enriched and vitalized the efforts of the local communities across the state; and

Whereas, We wish to celebrate Michigan Local Community Volunteers, thanking them for their selfless efforts and dedication; and,

Whereas, It is appropriate that a day should be set apart for the appreciation of volunteers in the local community and their impact on Michigan’s citizens; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare March 11, 2025, as Community Volunteer Day in the state of Michigan.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The resolution was adopted.

Reps. Outman, Alexander, Dievendorf, Fitzgerald, Glanville, Jaime Greene, Johnsen, Longjohn, MacDonell, Paiz, Rheingans, Rogers and Witwer offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 39.

A resolution to declare March 9-15, 2025, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous system, affecting nearly one million people in the United States alone; and

Whereas, MS generally strikes people in the prime of life, between ages 20 through 50, and the cause and course of the often debilitating symptoms remain unknown and no cure currently exists; and

Whereas, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is committed to a world free of MS, heightening public knowledge about and insight into the disease; and

Whereas, The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives, one that all Americans and Michiganders should support; and

Whereas, Since 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatments, and a cure, and has invested more than $1 billion in groundbreaking research; and

Whereas, Funds raised through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fuels research on pathways to MS cures and invests in the MS research workforce at the best medical centers, universities, and other institutions throughout the U.S. and abroad, leading to many breakthroughs in the treatment of MS; and

Whereas, Together we have transformed what it means to live with MS and provided global leadership to help achieve our vision of a world free of MS; and

Whereas, Eighteen in-person MS support groups led by Michigan MS leaders and supported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society create collaborative community and support for all Michiganders impacted by MS; and

Whereas, The state of Michigan recognizes the importance of finding the cause and cure of MS and expresses its appreciation for the dedication that the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has shown toward creating a world free of MS; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare March 9-15, 2025, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That we commend this observance for all Michiganders and encourage citizens to learn more about MS and what they can do to support individuals with MS and their families.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The resolution was adopted.

“Mr. Speaker and members of the House:

Transporting a juvenile with an adult co-conspirator potentially puts the youth in danger. It is in the best interest of a youth offender who is under the manipulation of an adult offender to remove them from that situation as soon as possible. Transporting them together gives the adult additional time to exert influence and could lead to additional abuse.”
