Rev. Daniel Kempin, Senior Administrative Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Midland, offered the following invocation:

“Lord Jesus,

We gather here in the midst of great abundance. We have a good land in Michigan, gifted people, and an abundant economy of business, agriculture and all manner of innovation. Among the greatest gifts we treasure is the freedom for citizens to govern themselves through the work of this body.

In the midst of the struggles and differences, which may be profound, grant that this body may be led to the common good. Grant to the members the ability to see the best of intentions in others, and even in disagreement to recognize and respect the integrity of honestly held beliefs. Grant Your grace to the outcome of their deliberations, for no human wisdom can foresee all calamities. May their work of debate and deliberation be honest and with honor.

Grant also to each member who serves here Your personal protection, and Your blessing. Do not leave them alone, Lord Jesus, but guide them in mercy and wisdom.

Amen.”

Rep. Fitzgerald moved that Reps. Arbit, Coffia, Foreman, McFall, Paiz and Whitsett be excused from today’s session.
