Rep. Jennifer Wortz, from the 35th District, offered the following invocation:
“Father God, it’s that time of year we call Advent, where we remember the gift of Your son that You sent to be born as a baby here in our world. You chose what was seen at the time as the least and lowliest of places and people to make Your entrance. When Your servant Mary heard from the angel of the Messiah’s coming, she prayed:
‘Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For He took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and He has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones. He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has helped His servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. For He made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and His children forever.’
Jesus’ coming was the fulfillment of prophecies and promises to the people of Israel. Isaiah said and Jesus shared these words when He began his ministry:
‘The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for His own glory.’
God, thank You for the gift of Your son Jesus. Thank You for the redemption and forgiveness Jesus offers us. Thank You for the captives He’s set free, like me. Thank You that Jesus opened the door for each of us to receive Your gifts of hope, peace, joy, and love. Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions
Reps. Arbit, Tsernoglou, Wooden, Skaggs, Rheingans, Young, Martus, Hope, Conlin, O’Neal, Mentzer, MacDonell, Price, Brixie, Pohutsky, Byrnes, McFall, Weiss and Morgan offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 224.
A resolution to urge the Trump-Vance administration to reverse its harmful decision to betray the trust of Northern Michiganders by denying federal disaster relief funding and provide the full amount of requested funding following the devastating March 2025 ice storm.
Whereas, In March 2025, a historic and devastating ice storm struck northern Michigan, crippling communities across the region, downing power lines, destroying critical infrastructure, and leaving tens of thousands of Michigan residents without power, heat, or safe access to basic necessities for days and, in some cases, weeks. The people of northern Michigan suffered immense physical, emotional, and financial hardship as a result of this disaster, with families, farmers, and small businesses facing significant property damage and economic loss; and
Whereas, In response to this devastation, the state of Michigan promptly requested federal disaster relief funding under the Stafford Act to help communities recover, rebuild, and restore critical services. The Trump-Vance administration callously denied the requested aid for individuals, public utilities, and hazard mitigation. In denying this disaster relief, the Trump-Vance administration abandoned northern Michigan families in their time of greatest need, despite the clear evidence of widespread destruction and urgent need for federal support; and
Whereas, This refusal to provide disaster relief for individual assistance represents a profound betrayal of the voters of northern Michigan — many of whom supported Donald Trump and J.D. Vance in good faith, believing they would fight for working families in rural and small-town America. This denial of disaster relief funding not only undermines the recovery of affected communities but also demonstrates a reckless disregard for the well-being of Michiganders. The people of Michigan deserve the full support of their federal government when disaster strikes, not abandonment and neglect at the hands of those sworn to serve them; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the Trump-Vance administration to reverse its harmful decision to betray the trust of Northern Michiganders by denying federal disaster relief funding and provide the full amount of requested funding following the devastating March 2025 ice storm; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to Committee on Government Operations.
______
Rep. BeGole moved that House Committees be given leave to meet during the balance of today’s session.
The motion prevailed.
